Common Plumbing Problems 2

Chances are, as a homeowner (or even as a renter), you will most likely run into some sort of plumbing problem at some point in your life. While all plumbing problems are annoying to deal with, some can be minor fixes and some can be major catastrophes. Whether a big issue or small, there are some plumbing problems that are more common than others. We compiled a list a little while back of the most common potential issues that you may run into, so that you can be better prepared. While that list was a good start, we decided that there are some more plumbing problems that you may run into as well. Let’s check them out.

LOW WATER PRESSURE

There’s nothing worse than getting into your shower and discovering that your water pressure is less than satisfactory. There’s just something about adequate water pressure that makes it seem much easier to get clean, whether it is in the shower, washing dishes, or something else. Low water pressure can be caused by many factors, but the most common seems to be clogs or backups within your pipes. While sometimes this can be a quick fix, since it may be hard to track down exactly where the root of the issue is, it may be better to call in a professional.

HIGH WATER PRESSURE

If low water pressure is a problem, high water pressure should be a solution, right? Not quite. While it is desirable to have decent water pressure for many reasons, there are just as many reasons why you don’t want the pressure to be too high. If your water pressure is too high, you may start noticing things such as noisy plumbing fixtures, running toilets, and leaking faucets. If you begin to hear knocking noises when certain appliances are running, or if you notice excess water running in your toilet, sink, or shower, it may be time to check into your water pressure.

Water pressure that is too high can cause numerous damages over time. Extensive periods of time with high water pressure can cause plumbing fixtures and pipe joints to loosen, causing leaks. High water pressure leads to more erosion, which can lead to your pipes cracking or breaking much faster than they would normally. With high water pressure, your pipes and appliances such as dishwashers, washing machines, and water heaters, all have a shortened life span. This means more frequent repairs and replacements. More water pressure means more water used. Often, this water is actually wasted. This excess water translates into higher utility bills, and those costs can add up fast. If you suspect that your water pressure may be higher than necessary, it might be time to call in a professional.

FAULTY WATER HEATERS

Another common problem that you may run into with your plumbing is a faulty water heater. If you notice that water is taking longer to heat up, isn’t staying hot for as long, or isn’t getting warm at all, you may have an issue with your water heater. Issues with this appliance can vary from a pilot light going out to needing to replace the entire unit. Checking your pilot light to ensure that it’s still lit is a good place to start. However, if the pilot light is not the problem, it may be a good idea to consult with an expert to see if your unit needs maintenance or replacement.
