Your main sewer line (or simply “main line”), a large drain pipe, connects every drain in your home to the municipal sewage system or your septic tank depending on where you live in the valley.
When your main line becomes clogged, blocked or broken, every single plumbing fixture in your home starts to drain slowly or back up completely.
And a complete blockage causes a huge, smelly mess for you to deal with… your kitchen and bathroom sinks, your bathtubs and showers, your toilets, etc. all back up and cause flooding or worse!

HOW DO I KNOW IF MY MAIN SEWER LINE IS CLOGGED OR BROKEN?
Your main sewer line lies buried beneath the ground, out of sight and (usually) out of mind. So problems with it, whether impending or present, lie hidden from the naked eye.
Those problems lurk in the darkness ready and waiting to cause trouble. And unfortunately for the average homeowner, like an unwelcomed house guest of the worst type they seem bound to show their ugly presence at the most inconvenient of times to mess up your life.
Clogs give some obvious early warnings when water begins to disappear more slowly down the drain. Or you might notice a foul stench or odor coming from drains or from seemingly unlikely places like your yard. And of course, big trouble manifests itself in a drain that completely stops up and overflows. However, when every plumbing fixture in your home backs up together, you can be pretty certain you’ve got some main sewer line blockage.
It might not be so obvious at the onset with the problem still in its early stages. You might notice for example wastewater backing up from your shower drain when you flush the toilet. You might start hearing strange gurgling noises coming from your toilet and drains.
It’s always best to give us a call early to nip your sewer problem in the bud before it becomes a bigger (and more expensive) problem to fix.

WHAT CAUSES A MAIN SEWER LINE CLOG?
The likely cause of your clogged sewer line depends on the age of your home.
For homes in older, established neighborhoods with large, mature trees, tree roots create the most problems. The roots grow long and also increase in diameter over the years seeking out moisture and nutrients in our desert environment. Your sewer drain line provides a great source of both. Roots crack open or crush the sewer lines they infiltrate and ultimately cause catastrophic failure. Early signs of this particular problem include the previously mentioned gurgling noises in your drains as well as root fragments present in the debris that backs up into the drains of your plumbing fixtures.
Why does the pipe break?
Advancements in drain pipe technology and materials make them fairly reliable and trouble free, however nothing is perfect and completely indestructible. Sewer pipes constructed of heavy cast iron may still suffer galvanic corrosion (rust) and ultimately breakdown over time. Clay tile pipes can eventually become brittle and crack with age, especially if they weren’t properly installed. Modern plastic drain pipes formed from PVC or ABS polymers may suffer failure if water temperature exceeds their rating. And of course, any type of sewer drain pipe will fail in the presence of extreme pressure, and that pressure may come from internal water pressure or external ground pressure.
For newer homes (and all homes), we see the standard problems you might expect forming clogs; large foreign objects like toys flushed down the toilet, soap and hair or grease buildup, paper towels, feminine hygiene products and even giant wads of toilet paper.
Additionally, your main sewer line has a slope built into the installation design so that gravity pulls your wastewater towards the sewer. Over time, things like the ground shifting and settling can change the magnitude and direction of the slope causing a drainage and backup problem for you even though the sewer pipe itself may be sound and unclogged.
HOW WILL YOU FIX OR UNCLOG MY MAIN SEWER LINE?
One of the first things we’ll do when we show up to clear a main line blockage is locate your outside sewer line cleanout if your property has one. From there we can sometimes get a quick visual on what’s causing your problem. Depending on the nature of the problem, the simple act of removing the cleanout cap might release the pressure buildup and allow wastewater to drain outside rather than inside your home until the root cause of the problem is corrected.
If there’s some serious flooding going on, we will shut off your water at the source immediately to minimize and prevent further damage.
If we suspect a main line clog, we might advise we run our power-assisted snake auger (rooter) through to mechanically clear the drain pipe blockage and get it flowing freely again. We have the specialized heavy-duty equipment to do this work correctly and efficiently.
Our trained technicians might also advice hydro jetting to clear the drain pipe obstruction. The hydro jetting process uses a special piece of professional equipment to blast a stream of high-pressure water at the blockage buildup until it loosens and frees the clog and blows it down the line.
No matter the nature of your particular problem, you can rest assured that we have the expertise and equipment to solve it in the most efficient and cost-effective manner. We also have the tools and training to do a remote video camera inspection of your main sewer line should it prove necessary to correctly diagnose the nature of the blockage and assess any damage that might be present.
Should we determine that your main line is collapsed or structurally damaged, we will advise the best course of action to repair the problem or replace your main sewer line and have your plumbing back in full working order promptly.
